Developing the practice and creativity of the literacy teacher

This course aims to develop the practice of classroom teachers who are interested in developing their teaching in the area of literacy and English. The course will support teachers working with the revised Primary Strategy. Target groups for this course include classroom teachers, support and special needs teachers. Course content covers a range of areas, both practical and theoretical, aimed at raising standards through the development of teachers' practice.
Areas covered include: the teaching of reading and writing, talk and literacy, assessment and record-keeping, the role of texts in teaching literacy,
planning activities around texts, bilingual and gender issues, reading, writing and talk across the curriculum, ICT, spelling and phonics.

 Course members will undertake:

  • in-depth classroom action research based on case studies and an intervention project.
  • a critical evaluation of their own school and classroom practice
  • reviews of research and reports
  • case studies
  • an end of course written essay of 5,000 words. (accreditation)

Tutor support will be available. The course is accredited at 60 points at Level 4 (M level). Points will be transferable to higher education institutions.
