Higher Level Teaching Assistant Courses
For TAs in Nursery, Primary and Secondary schools, Special schools and PRUs

CLPE is an Approved Provider for HLTA training and preparation. These courses are for Teaching Assistants wishing to develop their role as part of the professional team in school through the award of HLTA status.

Teaching Assistants should  visit the HLTA website for further information and to assess individual experience and qualifications against the Professional Standards at www.tda.gov.uk/support/hlta.

Which route?
TAs can choose between two routes:

A.  Preparation for assessment route: 3 course days. This course will provide briefing and guidance in preparation for the assessment of TAs against the
Professional Standards for Higher Level Teaching Assistants (HLTAs).

This route is for experienced TAs who are already demonstrating the HLTA Professional Standards in their everyday practice in school. TAs might, for example,
already have successfully undertaken professional training such as the CLPE  STA course, or NVQ level 3. TAs will be expected to demonstrate that they can work effectively as a team member with a range of groupings including individual pupils, small groups and the whole class.

B.  12 day professional development training  plus 3 day HLTA preparation for assessment
This course is accredited at 60 points , 1st year degree level HE Credit Accumulation Transfer (CAT)  scheme.
The course builds on the work of the extremely successful Specialist Teaching Assistant course and is designed for TAs who are seeking more in-depth knowledge and understanding of teaching and learning, theory and practice. The course will cover aspects of: literacy, numeracy, ICT, planning and assessment, behaviour management, differentiation and inclusion, and includes a focus on aspects of organisation including whole-class and group management. The course will be taught through a combination of workshops, discussions and seminars together with input from specialist speakers and classroom practitioners. Participants will be expected to undertake practical school-based tasks, and demonstrate theoretical understanding through the completion of a portfolio and 2 written assignments

Head teachers will need to name a mentor to support the work of the TA in school.

Please note that accreditation can be used as part of a Foundation or first degree (subject to individual HEI regulations). This will be an especially  important benefit to TAs considering a teaching career.

Eligibility
All applicants need to achieve qualifications in English/literacy and in Mathematics/numeracy equivalent to at least level 2 of the National Qualifications Framework before they begin the 3 day Preparation for Assessment course.  Applicants are required to show their certificates on the first day of the course.

To try out the level 2 numeracy tests see link on CLPE website http://www.clpe.co.uk/courses/courses_main_03c.html or go to www.learndirect.co.uk
for further information on test centres.

Application procedure
If you wish to apply for CLPE HLTA training and
preparation:

¨ Talk to your Head Teacher who will need to support your application

¨ Apply to the LA for HLTA grant funding. Forms may be online or available from LA

¨ Telephone CLPE once funding is agreed to discuss preferred course dates
Applicants without LA funding should contact CLPE direct.

This must be done through electronic registration on the HLTA website (www.hlta.gov.uk). HLTA training is grant-funded and applicants should seek funding through their LEA before registering, and choosing CLPE as their approved provider. The TTA will then notify CLPE.

Where overseas qualifications in English/literacy and mathematics/numeracy are held they need to be verified as equivalent to at least level 2 of the National Qualifications Framework. For further information and advice please contact UK NARIC at www.naric.org.uk.
