Examine ways to create an effective writing classroom which will enthuse and support young writers in Key Stage 1.

This course will explore important aspects of the classroom literacy environment and key routines for writing including approaches to spelling. We will consider the contribution to children’s writing development made by quality texts and the use of creative approaches including talk, drama, drawing and bookmaking.

Practical ideas for supporting the Literacy Of Children Who Have EAL  Ann Ross, CLPE

Introduction to ICT to support mathematics for teaching assistants Lauren Price, CLPE
This practical one day course for teaching assistants in Key Stages 1 and 2 will give an introduction to ways of using ICT to support teaching and learning in mathematics. Participants will use Word and Excel to produce resources to take away and use in school, to support learning and for professional uses such as record-keeping.

DEVELOPING SPELLING IN THE CLASSROOM AND SCHOOL  Olivia O’Sullivan, CLPE
Olivia O’Sullivan, co-author of Understanding Spelling (Routledge, 2007,  will look at children’s spelling development, introduce practical approaches for Key Stages 1 and 2, offer a framework for a school policy on spelling, and introduce course members to an assessment framework to support children with difficulties.  Course members will receive a copy of Understanding Spelling as part of the course.

Practical ideas for working with parents

CREATIVE APPROACHES TO WRITING THROUGH BOOKMAKING

This practical half day course is an ideal tool for enlivening children’s motivation for writing. Participants will consider how having a real purpose, audience and motivation raises the quality and creativity of children’s writing. Participants will make a variety of books, including pop-ups and secret doors, suitable for children to create from reception to year 6.
