CREATIVE APPROACHES TO WRITING IN KEY STAGE 2

In this one day course we will consider the literacy environment within the KS2 classroom and the contexts which can support children as they create and shape texts. Drawing on CLPE’s research and recent projects we will explore a range of creative ways into writing to engage all children. The course will also focus on publishing  and presenting their work to a high standard. Jo Pruden, formerly of Shapla School, Tower Hamlets will be talking about her practice, and showing many examples of work.

DEVELOPING SPELLING IN THE CLASSROOM AND IN SCHOOL
Olivia O’Sullivan, CLPE
In this course, Olivia O’Sullivan co-author of Understanding Spelling (Routledge, 2007)  will look at children’s spelling development, introduce practical approaches for Key Stages 1 and 2, offer a framework for a school policy on spelling, and introduce course members to an assessment framework to support children with difficulties.  Course members will receive a copy of Understanding Spelling as part of the course.

10 great ways to teach  and enjoy poetry

A one-day course for teachers on teaching poetry – enthusing, reading, writing, performing – and creating teaching sequences.  You will have an opportunity to enjoy and explore a range of poetry and ways of working in the classroom.

PLANNING CREATIVELY AROUND TEXTS IN YEARS 1 AND 2

This course will explore ways teachers can plan a rich extended literacy curriculum in years 1 and 2, planning blocks of work around a strong well chosen book. Working in this way enables teachers to work creatively to ensure meaningful opportunities for talk, and to plan relevant and purposeful reading and writing experiences. We will consider the ways in which play, role-play, drama, storytelling and ICT combine to develop children’s confidence and success as readers and writers.

CREATING MULTIMEDIA TEXTS

In this one-day course you will learn how to create stories with PowerPoint and PhotoStory using text, images, animations and sound. With the guidance of a sympathetic tutor by the end of the day you will have made your own electronic talking books to take away.  An entirely practical course.

Planning creatively around texts in Years 5 and 6

This course will explore ways teachers can develop a literature based literacy curriculum in years 5 and 6 working with strong literacy texts to plan 2-6 week blocks of work using a range of creative teaching approaches. This course will draw on recent projects led by CLPE which have shown that focusing on a whole text over a longer period of time supports children’s engagement with books and reading and is also reflected in the quality of their writing.

SPRING  TERM 2009
TEACHING LITERACY WITH MULTICULTURAL BOOKS IN KEY STAGE 2

The National Curriculum requires children to study texts from a variety of cultures and traditions. This one-day course builds on the CLPE/QCA Reading Differences project, which focused on introducing children to a broader range of literature from around the world, and ways of teaching it in KS2. Teaching sequences from the project will be shared.

WRITING In Key Stage 1

Children’s confidence and competence in oral language plays a vital role in their writing development. This course will explore ways to create language-rich classrooms anchored in a shared enjoyment of reading which will encourage children to experiment with both spoken and written language. It will consider ways to develop purposeful and meaningful approaches to writing which encourage children to clarify and organise their ideas for writing through play, talk, role-play and storytelling.

Power of Reading Project
