course we will consider the
literacy environment within the
KS2 classroom and the contexts
which can support children as
they create and shape texts.
Drawing on CLPE’s research and
recent projects we will explore
a range of creative ways into
writing to engage all children.
The course will also focus on
publishing and presenting their
work to a high standard. Jo
Pruden, formerly of Shapla
School, Tower Hamlets will be
talking about her
practice, and showing many
examples of work.

DEVELOPING
SPELLING IN THE CLASSROOM AND IN
SCHOOL

Olivia O’Sullivan co-author of
Understanding Spelling (Routledge,
2007) will look at children’s
spelling development, introduce
practical approaches for Key
Stages 1 and 2, offer a
framework for a school policy on
spelling, and introduce course
members to an assessment
framework to support children
with difficulties. Course
members will receive a copy of
Understanding Spelling as
part of the course.

curriculum in years 1 and 2,
planning blocks of work around a
strong well chosen book. Working
in this way enables teachers to
work creatively to ensure
meaningful opportunities for
talk, and to plan relevant and
purposeful reading and writing
experiences. We will consider
the ways in which play,
role-play, drama, storytelling
and ICT combine to develop
children’s confidence and
success as readers and writers.
