Information

Over the past four years, 750 schools and nearly 1000 teachers have been directly involved in the Power of Reading project. As well as a large number of individual schools projects have run in individual local authorities including Brent, Cumbria, Hackney, Southwark, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Sheffield, Kirklees, Southampton, Redbridge and Wandsworth and also Excellence in Cities groups and EAZs from Lambeth, Newham, Hastings and Croydon. The project draws on CLPE’s extensive experience in the effective use of literature in classroom developed in previous projects including The Reader in the Writer and Boys on the Margin and publications such as Bookpower and the Core Booklist.

Project aims
The project aims to enhance teachers’ and children’s pleasure in reading and raise children’s achievement through developing teachers’ knowledge of literature and its use in the primary classroom.

Response from teachers and children
The response from teachers, children, school leaders and LAs has been one of overwhelming enthusiasm.

  • Project teachers report that children are more enthusiastic about reading and writing activities.

  • Data from individual teachers has shown significant improvement in reading and also in writing, particularly for boys.

  • Cumbria LA reported a 6.5% increase in English results in schools working with the Power of Reading project in 2007 as opposed to 2.2% to the LA as a whole and 1% nationally.

  • Teachers speak of feeling more skilled in their practice and gaining greater satisfaction from their literacy teaching.

Projects for 2009-2010 will begin in September/October 2009
