The library contains a wide range of children’s books in print, with some specialist collections of poetry and traditional stories.

Poetry
This is a comprehensive section subdivided as follows: Action Rhymes; Nursery and Traditional Rhymes; Humorous Poetry; General Anthologies; Thematic Anthologies; Collections by Individual Poets; Poetry written by Children; Songbooks; Teachers’ books about poetry.

Part of the collection is historical.

Traditional Stories
This is a historically important collection of stories from all cultures. Picture books are arranged by title so that many variants of the same story can be found together.

Collections relating to geographical areas are grouped together. There are also collections of myths and legends, stories with religious themes in this section of the library.

Picture Books
This outstanding collection of picture books and paperback picture books is divided into infant and junior collections.

Big Books
The library holds a growing collection of lively big books – both story and information books.

Books for Babies
The library’s attractive collection of books for babies is expanding, along with CLPE’s involvement in Family Learning Projects in Southwark.

Short stories
Collection of contemporary short stories are increasingly popular with teachers for use in the Literacy Hour.

Plays
This section includes teachers’ books on drama as well as play texts themselves

Books in community languages
The library holds a large collection of dual and single language books in a wide range of community languages, including: Albanian, Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, French, Greek, Gujerati, Hindi, Portuguese, Punjabi, Serbo-Croatian, Somali, Spanish, Tamil, Turkish, Urdu, Vietnamese, Yoruba.

Reading schemes
The library holds a selection of material from some of the currently used reading schemes

Alphabet books
The library holds a rich collection of alphabet books by a range of authors and illustrators, and on a variety of themes.

There is also a collection of counting books.

Fiction in series
Most of the series shelved in the library are for newly independent readers, such as Colour Young Puffins, Walker Sprinters, Orchard Crunchies. Teachers browse through the collection to help with their selections.

Younger fiction
This section consists of short and accessible chapter books, aimed roughly at the 6 – 8 age group.

Junior fiction
This section, of fiction from roughly age 8+, includes new contemporary and popular classic fiction.

Secondary fiction
This section of fiction clearly aimed at 11+ includes award winning titles

Graphic books
This section holds a collection of books for children in this rapidly expanding and immediately appealing genre.

Information books
This large section of holds information books across the primary age range, organised by subject using the simplified Dewey Decimal classification. It includes a range of information books and also dictionaries, thesauruses, atlases, biography and autobiography.

Teachers’ library
This section of the reference library holds practical and theoretical books covering a wide spectrum of educational matters and issues, with the main focus being on:

Writing
Speaking & Listening
Children’s Literature
Assessment
Gender issues
Multicultural issues
Bilingualism
There is internet access in the library.
