CLPE Core book collections are good quality texts selected for particular purposes, by CLPE staff, in consultation with teachers, with specific criteria in mind for each collection. They are detailed in The Core Book List published by CLPE and updated every two years - the new Core Book List 2008 is now available. The  new core book collections are available for viewing in the library.

NEW Core Book List 2008

The core collections listed in The Core Book List are organised according to the following age groups:
  Nursery/Reception
   • Years 1 and 2
  Years 3 and 4

Years 5 and 6

The three collections are:

Learning to read core collection
These are books that have many of the features that support developing readers: they are repetitive, rhythmical, often rhyming, offer strong illustration support, inviting prediction and helping to promote a range of strategies

Literature core collection
These are multilayered texts - including traditional tales, novels, picture books, poetry - extending experience and range for all readers. They are the books that could form the basis of a read-aloud programme
Information core collection
The existence of these collections for Key Stages 1 and 2 acknowledges reading for information as an important area of reading experience from the beginning.
