CLPE
has put together a useful and accessible booklist, Choosing
Texts for the National Literacy Strategy, to help
teachers to find books that will help them plan for the National
Literacy Strategy.
The suggested
books are listed under the genre and topic categories specified
by the NLS for each year group. They are drawn from the Core
Book List, with many additional titles, and offer teachers
a way of ensuring that planning can be based on good quality,
whole texts that children and teachers can enjoy listening
to and working with together.
In
order to develop as critical, reflective and enthusiastic
readers and writers, children need to engage with books which
are meaningful and interesting to them. Choosing Texts
for the Literacy Hour suggests such books.
The list
identifies books that can be used for shared reading, and
also indicates where titles are available in a range of languages,
enabling teachers to resource the languages represented in
their schools.
Group
and guided reading
This very useful separate section of books for guided reading
is organised in year groups, and matches the levels in CLPE’s
Reading
Scales. The Reading Scales provide teachers with a way
of seeing, understanding and tracking progress and development
in reading across the primary age range. Matching the books
to the scales offers a way of ensuring progression in guided
reading, using good quality texts drawn from the Core
Book List. The books listed provide a range of texts
which includes patterned, supportive texts for inexperienced
readers, a selection of literature that encourages discussion
at all levels, and a range of information texts that can be
used in guided reading sessions.
