About Poetry Right Now!
Poetry Right Now!
provides a unique
opportunity for teachers to
work with poet and
Children’s Laureate Michael
Rosen. In the workshops
teachers are working
alongside Michael and CLPE
staff to develop their
confidence in teaching, as
well as their personal
understanding and enjoyment
of poetry.
Michael Rosen
Michael Rosen is one
of the most
significant figures
in contemporary
children’s poetry.
He was one of the
first poets to draw
closely on his own
childhood
experiences and
played a key role in
opening up
children’s access to
poetry, both through
his own writing and
his anthologies. He
was also amongst the
first poets to make
school visits and
continues to work
with teachers and
children throughout
the UK and beyond.
The
workshops foreground poetry
as a significant, enjoyable,
and highly inclusive aspect
of language and literacy
learning. In addition to
attending the sessions,
teachers are involved in
tracking the progress of two
case study children,
trialling ideas and
approaches from the sessions
in school and keeping a
journal of a personal poetry
journey throughout the year.
Elements of the project :
-
Exploring the
role of poetry
in learning and
literacy
-
Developing
poetry as part
of the
creative
curriculum
-
Responding to
and performing
poetry
-
Using powerful
texts to
stimulate poetry
writing
-
Introducing
poetry
anthologies and
a range of
single poet
collections
-
Developing
poetry teaching
sequences
Ofsted
Ofsted
recently reported that
poetry teaching is
“weaker than
other aspects of English
[and]
remains an
area for development”
“The
most effective
lessons showed..
enthusiastic
teaching and well
chosen activities
[and
that]
active approaches
[lead
to]
a
level of
sophistication and
self expression.. a
direct result of
effective and
engaging teaching.”
