CLPE Power of Reading Project

The Power of Reading 2008-2009

"We need to reflect upon the reading material available in schools and whether it entices children to want to read."
Chief Inspector of Schools David Bell,  2004

“One of the most effective and immediately successful initiatives we have tried… our involvement in the project could not have been more satisfying".
Brent Headteacher, 2007

“I wouldn't be exaggerating to say it's one of the most useful, fulfilling and accessible curriculum related courses i've been associated with and I have nothing but praise for your organisation.”

CLPE’s highly successful Power of Reading Project will run for a fourth year from September 2008 – July 2009.

Background
Over the past three years, 350 schools and over 500 teachers have been directly involved in the Power of Reading project. As well as a large number of individual schools projects have run in individual local authorities including Brent, Cumbria, Hackney, Lincolnshire, Southwark, Redbridge and Wandsworth and also EAZs in Lambeth, Newham and Croydon. The project draws on CLPE’s extensive experience in the effective use of literature in classroom developed in previous projects including The Reader in the Writer and Boys on the Margin and publications such as Bookpower and the Core Booklist.

Project aims
The project aims to enhance teachers’ and children’s pleasure in reading and raise children’s achievement through developing teachers’ knowledge of literature and its use in the primary classroom.

Response from teachers and children
The response from teachers, children, school leaders and LAs has been one of overwhelming enthusiasm.

  • Project teachers report that children are more enthusiastic about reading and writing activities.

  • Data from individual teachers has shown significant improvement in reading and also in writing, particularly for boys.

  • Cumbria LA reported a 6.5% increase in English results in schools working with the Power of Reading project in 2007 as opposed to 2.2% to the LA as a whole and 1% nationally.

  • Teachers speak of feeling more skilled in their practice and gaining greater satisfaction from their literacy teaching.
